Milquetoast Journalists
Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 08:12AM It's amazing that with all the smoke in the past 6 months that hardly any journalists are following leads to get big stories. I looked through my news reader on Google today and these are some of the most bland stories I can imagine. There are more journalists talking about journalism than actually doing journalistic work.
Journalism should be somewhat edgy, like Woodward and Bernstein during Watergate. What I admired about journalism in my youth was the image of the reporter bull-dogging a lead and going forward no matter what obstacles were in the way -- and they didn't seem to be afraid of power.
I think the Obama administration's push-back has had a dampening effect on good journalism. Journalists appear afraid of being ostracized by the political class if they push too hard, dig up too much dirt. But with the Goldman Sachs connections, ACORN, IG-Gate, the Afghanistan war, Valerie Jarrett and all the questions about her influence, healthcare wheeling and dealing, the problem of not knowing what's happened to all the stimulus and bailout money, it appears that there is a goldmine of reporting our there -- however, the stories that do appear are weak, bland -- just no gutsy content.
Now, there's talk of the government subsidizing newspapers? Maybe this is the reason for the wimpy reporting -- they are waiting for a bailout -- I can only imagine how boring journalism will become.
