The essence of the posts in this series will be part of a book I'm writing. I want to close this by saying I believe there's a change taking place in America, and it's driven by a reaction to a too-powerful State.
My hope is that this is not just a partisan reaction, and that liberals begin realizing that the anti-capitalist narrative has misrepresented the reality of a free market, and that Big Government Republicans and social conservatives realize that freedom is freedom and not a selective process to be determined by Big Shots with the right pedigree and proper set of morals. A free market offers more than widgets, tennis shoes, missiles and hair gel -- there's a market for art, for spirituality, for intellectual pursuits, for environmental protection innovation, for new energy sources, for music, for charity organizations, for the design of new living arrangements, for sexuality, for health, for cosmopolitan openness between cultures, for new forms of communication and self awareness, but the market has to be free, not guided by an anti-social State concerned only with the perpetuation of power and control.
A truly free market breaks down the relationship between government and big corporations which collude to rig the game and establish a ruling class. A free market offers opportunities for nobodies with big ideas and desire. A free market allows the formation of innovative working arrangements in which enlightened companies find ways to bring out the best of the human mind in cooperative efforts that make production an enriching experience. We are the free market -- all of us, and unless power-mongers are protected by the weapons of the State, we can prevent the few from controlling the many.
A free market is not perfect -- it's a work in progress, nimble and flexible enough to change and adjust when it meets complexity -- a free market is the antidote to tyranny and the slow degeneration into dependence and apathy. A free market won't save an empire -- it's what failed empires have never allowed, because it transcends empires and makes emperors obsolete.
