Crist is an example of fading moderate support
Thursday, April 29, 2010 at 07:25AM David Frum, as usual, is wrong in his assessment of Marco Rubio and his chances of winnng the election. Rubio's lead and destruction of Crist shows solid support for Rubio in the general election. The fact that Crist is going independent reflects poorly on the centrist mindset -- just as Specter revealed his true colors. Frum is right, though, that Crist should drop out of the race.
Rubio is the face of a new Republican Party, and centrists like Frum might as well accept that fact. Republican centrists will win in some races, but the transformation of the party will be through representatives like Rubio. This process is just beginning - it's not this election that will tell the tale, but elections over the next couple of decades. There will be a very sharp distinction between the Republican Party and the Democrat Party as our country divides into those dependent on the State and those protecting the private sector, Constitution and economy from the government.
The demonization of the Tea Party might have an effect on some independents this coming election, but once they see clearly that the demonization is hype, and new Republicans like Rubio replace the Republican establishment, the independents will move toward the Republican Party. The Democrats have no more Obamas up their sleeves -- that was a great marketing campaign which won't be duplicated for a long, long time. It's unlikely the stars will be aligned so perfectly for Democrats, with an unpopular Republican beaten down by two wars and an historical candidate like Obama. I'm afraid Frum's liberal tendencies were teased, and his excitement a little premature.
