President? Maybe it doesn't matter
Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 02:02PM I don't ever remember seeing a President on tv more than I've seen Obama on tv. It seems like everyoday he's giving a speech, or doing something media thinks is important enough to televise. Very important media heads say that Obama will likely win again in 2012. I don't know how, but I guess the very important media heads know what they're talking about. Does it matter? Some on the Right I respect very much say it will be tragic if Obama serves a second term, and I have argued that Obama is laying low, progressive-wive, setting up a second term to finish his progressive agenda and seal his legacy. I'm sure Obama wants to go down in history as a transformational figure, although I'm also sure he's not through manufacturing his Greatness -- he's a young man, and there's a global stage beyond the puny American stage.
Does it matter? If America is tired of government intervention, they will elect representatives who promise to bring government under control, right? But, can we trust representatives? They have promised in the past to limit the power and cost of government only to increase government power and cost once they are in office. Is our statist system out of control? Is it possible for representatives to join together in sufficient numbers to roll back government? Will the American people become policially active to the point they force representatives to follow through? I'm not sure. It doesn't look promising.
Maybe if Ron Paul is elected and Congress is controlled by New Republicans who embrace limits on government power and the principles of free enterprise, we could make progress rolling back modern liberal gains and dismantling the statist system which serves in place of a Constitutional system. A Ron Paul win is a very long shot, as is a Congress dominated by limited government/free market representatives. I think America has to experience a terrible financial collapse which shakes every one of us to the core. But, even then, after such a collapse, it's far from certain the American people would demand a government based on limited government and a free market. They will more likely fall for the solutions of the strongest leader who rises promising security, safefy and stability. I doubt this leader is going to care much about limits on power. This could be Obama going into his second term -- if the global financial crisis is accelerated by unfortunate events, or if we find ourselves in a costly war against Iran, Obama could convince enough frightened voters that Congress has prevented him from doing the things necessary to establish stability and security, so if we'll give him more time and more power, he'll fix the situation and put America on the path to 21st Century greatness. He will only ask for you to give up a few more of your freedoms. Plus, how will we ever get by without his daily appearances to guide us?
